Misconceptions of Coaching

Have you been on the fence as it relates to jumping into a coaching relationship? Just like with anything else, there are misconceptions of what coaching is. Below are some of the top misconceptions, along with a short explanation of what is actually true. Let’s dive in!

1. Coaching is the same as consultation, and primarily based on advice giving

Coaching is primarily based on a strategic framework of questions, listening, accountability and more. There may be moments of consultation, but it is not the foundation. Coaching is its own niche, and professional coaches have accredited coaching credentials to serve those in this capacity.

2. The coach drives the coaching relationship

The coachee primarily drives the coaching relationship, with partnership and guidance from the coach. There are different styles of coaching a coach may used based on the coachee’s needs. Coaches specialize in knowing how to navigate the coaching relationship by offering the appropriate tools needed in the coaching journey, so that clients succeed.

3. The coach is the expert in the coaching relationship

Christ and God’s Word, with the help of the Holy Spirit, are the foundation in the coaching relationship. Coaches in the non-Christian space would say the coachee is the primary expert, but at Art of Hope, we believe everything starts with Christ, and beginning here informs all areas of life and next steps a coachee is to take.

4. The cost of coaching is not worth the investment

Financial investment in a professional service such as coaching will always reap results. In the same way someone who needs therapy invests in counseling sessions, the person who wants to grow in an area of their life invests in a coach to finally make a change and accomplish a major goal.
